Free Soil Consulting Group

Free yourself from the “Dirt” that’s holding you back.

Free Soil is a metaphor for how we work with clients. It means freeing up the "dirt" that keeps people from planning effectively: lack of time, lack of capacity. We want clients to know that we're going to go deep together, bring some air in, and co-create a roadmap customized to them that helps them achieve their goals.

About the Founder,
Christa Brown

Christa Brown has 10+ years of experience in building development and communications strategies from the ground up.

As Managing Director, Development and Communications at a nonprofit, Christa leads the org’s fundraising and communications strategy, stewarding over $9 million in revenue, shaping campaign and storytelling arcs throughout the year, and leading robust development campaigns.

Previously, as Corporate Engagement Manager at the National Young Farmers Coalition, she managed a corporate partnership portfolio that generated more than $1.9 million in revenue. Christa developed detailed engagement plans to maximize partnership outcomes for partners such as Sweetgreen, General Mills, King Arthur Baking, and Patagonia, including: sponsorships, in-kind contributions, cause marketing, customer fundraising, employee engagement, communications and marketing, and/or shared value activities.

Prior to joining Young Farmers, Christa founded and served as Executive Director of Free Soil Arts Collective, the first Black-led arts organization in Massachusetts' Merrimack Valley, dedicated to amplifying the voices and work of artists of color. Under her leadership, the organization grew from a $12,300 crowdfunding campaign to an annual budget of $350,000 within three years and expanded artist participation from five to 75 artists over three years. She led the planning and execution of more than 34 programs and events, cultivated partnerships with more than 30 community organizations, and oversaw the organization's fundraising, communications, and strategic planning efforts. Christa also previously worked at Entrepreneurship for All, United Way, and Girls Inc.

Christa holds a BFA in Theatre from Longwood University and a Certificate in Nonprofit Management and Leadership from the Institute for Nonprofit Practice in affiliation with the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Citizenship and Public Service at Tufts University. She is also a proud member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc.

Christa adds capacity to projects by bringing in additional subcontractors, freelancers, and specialized expertise as required to meet the unique needs of each project.
